Gravity Always Wins is a response to Andy Warhol’s works, which celebrate the cult of personality and mass-produced artifice. But taking things a step forward (or downward), Tin Garcia displays glamour crumbling under the weight of gravity. Chairman Mao, Marilyn Monroe, and – of course – John F. Kennedy are taken to task. Even Imelda Marcos’ shoes decay.
These paintings explore new directions and depart from Tin’s hyper-detailed oil and ink style. The colors are raw, the strokes emotionally jagged. While Warhol attempted to reflect, Tin’s works are several times removed from their sources, and subject to some very human conundrums.
